The Ashokan Center was honored by the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD) Monastary in Woodstock, New York and blessed by Khenpo Tenkyong, KTD’s President and Senior Scholar Khenpo Ugyen on Saturday, April 23rd. Myself and Ashokan’s new Development Officer, Martin Bernstein were asked to celebrate Earth Day with KTD and their guests. Together, we celebrated Earth Day by considering the substance that defines life, water.
Like the many of Ashokan’s campers, most of the guests at KTD’s Earth Day Celebration were from New York City, so we shared with them what we share with the thousands of school children that come to our campus every year: the nature of water and it’s journey—from the beginning of Earth, 5.3 billion years ago, to today’s NYC.
It’s a story of explosive molten lava activity, the evolution of life, terraforming through by colliding continents, spreading oceans, and global glaciers, and is witnessed the trees, animals and our ancestors as it rains, pools and evaporates before our eyes. Water is what sustains life. At The Ashokan Center, we impart upon our campers the importance of being good stewards of the NYC watershed, we hope we imparted on the KTD’s guests the same.
Thank you again Karma Triyana Dharmachakra for sharing Earth Day with us, we look forward to the next time!
Sincerely,
Gina C. Gould, PhD
Executive Director
