Meet “Hope” and “She Who Passes Along Prayers”

A Leyland Cyprus, Cupressus leylandii, this young tree was celebrated last weekend by The Naraya, Dance For All People as a living prayer for “the good things of life to grow, never ending and everlasting from generation to generation.”

Wednesday, December 16, 2015, she was ceremoniously planted by Naraya elders, dancers and Ashokan staff. Hope seems happy in her new pond community together with wildlife, farm friends (sheep and goat), and staff.

A representation of the Tree of Life, Hope is a natural hybrid between the Alaskan cedar and Monterey Cyprus. She will grow to heights of more than 100 feet and comfortably weather Catskill winters. Hope has already hosted a bird’s nest; she portends to nurture many more.

We are honored to have Hope with us at Ashokan, where generations of people—those who came before us and those to follow—can know her.

We welcome you to visit Hope. Please call us at 845.240.8050 for available times to ensure the safety of the thousands of school children who come to Ashokan.
