Visiting schools to the Ashokan Center enjoy a special experience when Molly and Jay drop in for a surprise visit during one of their lunch times to give the kids and teachers a small taste of the many musical activities that take place at Ashokan. They start out by telling the kids and teachers some history about Ashokan and then bring that history to life with a few tunes that are special to this place, such as Ashokan Farewell and the kids favorite Homegrown Tomatoes. Molly and Jay also offer an optional ukulele class during their open recreation time on the same day of their visit. Here are a few words about the class and a photo from Molly:
A fun Uke class, offered as a choice for free time, was enjoyed by both students and teachers from the Riverside and Wilson schools. We taught the class two chords, and played and sang five songs, from American folk classics to Country hits. Everyone quickly became Uke players and enthusiasts. Two teachers who took the class even purchased a brightly colored Uke to take home for their very own! And everyone in the classes including Jay and I had a blast singing and strumming together. We know that music can provide a powerful tool for learning, a direct connection to our past , a meaningful expression of our emotions, and a joyful and fun group experience. On those notes we look forward to future Ashokan Center Uke classes!
