This fall we added an exciting new dimension to our watershed-related education programs by partnering with Trout in the Classroom to offer students a deeper look at stream ecology, water quality and watershed studies. With a grant from TIC, we’ve set up a 55 gallon tank with an elaborate water treatment system to simulate stream conditions, and have successfully hatched nearly 100 brown trout alevins.
Each visiting school that takes one of our water-related classes (Aquatic Ecology, Water Quality Assessment, Watershed Study) will visit the hatchlings, feed them, and take water samples to help monitor the health of their artificial habitat.
In the spring, when the trout are big enough to survive in the wild, we’ll release them in the Lower Esopus Creek that runs through our campus.
